1. Trail Ridge Road. Unbelievable views come courtesy of the nation’s highest continuous paved road as it winds over the continental divide through Rocky Mountain National Park. Plan for it soon though, such high elevations create enough snow to close the road fairly early in the cooler seasons and keep it closed all winter and most of the spring too.
2. I-70 through Glenwood Canyon. Though it’s quite a bit of a drive down the interstate from Denver, the area of highway winding through the canyon just before the world-famous hot springs mecca provides the most beautiful canyon walls carved by the Colorado river. Make sure to bring a camera.
3. Highway 14 through the Poudre River Canyon. Designated as a National Scenic Byway, the mountain highway winds from Fort Collins to the high-country area where Walden sits. As the last undammed river in Colorado, the Cache La Poudre cuts a beautiful path through the mountains.
4. If you are ready for an overnight trip, head down to southern Colorado area to the San Juan Mountains and the Million Dollar Highway. Look for historic mining structures and awe-inspiring views along a good portion of the white-knuckle ride.
