When you’re on the road, you want a smooth ride. Sure, you can’t do much about the potholes, pedestrians jaywalking, or the stop-and-go traffic. But you can control your vehicle’s alignment. So if you’re rolling over the pavement and you find that your vehicle is shuttering, it may be time to get an alignment to regain that smooth ride that you desire. If a smooth ride isn’t enough of a reason to bring your car into the shop for an alignment, we have a few more reasons that might convince you:

Reasons for a Wheel Alignment

You’ll Tear Through Tread

Tires are built to last under some of the most demanding conditions. They hold tons of moving metal as they scream over a surface that is equivalent to sand paper. However, a bit of misalignment can wreak havoc on your tires. While aligned wheels roll smoothly over a surface, misaligned tires can actually fight each other and this can cause shearing across the road’s surface. That means that you’ll tear through your tire’s tread, and you’ll have to replace your tires more often.

You’re Wasting Fuel

What’s worse, you’re wasting fuel when you drive a car with poor alignment. Since your wheels will be fighting against themselves, your engine will have to try harder to keep your vehicle moving. You may notice that your miles per gallon is sinking as you fill up tank after tank. Those dollars add up.

It’s Unsafe

It’s a bit of a no-brainer, but driving on misaligned wheels is less safe than driving on aligned wheels. When your wheels are misaligned you lose traction on the road, and you impair the control of the vehicle. That can be especially unsafe at higher speeds, when your vehicle can shake uncontrollably.

It’s Uncomfortable

We already made mention of this one, but we’ll say it again: Driving with misaligned wheels is uncomfortable. Your car will jerk and weave as you try to control it. The whole body of the vehicle can vibrate.

When to Get an Alignment

Pay attention to the alignment of your car. If it pulls to the side while you’re driving (by the way, a little pull is almost always going to happen), your wheels may be out of line. If your wheels vibrate, your alignment may, once again, be to blame. In these instances, it’s time to take your car into the shop.

You should also have your alignment checked at least once per year, and more often if you drive your car frequently. Be sure to check your tire pressure often as well to ensure that you keep your wheels aligned (you can always check your tire pressure in a few seconds while you fill up on gas).
